Carolyn at Wishing Elephant is trying to send a message to our daughters by starting Operation Strong Girl, a movement which aims to send our girls the message “you are strong.” She sent me a costume for Isobel and asked me to take her photo and share why she is a strong girl. Isobel celebrated by showing me some stretches and practicing her push-ups. She also insisted on adding a blinged-out vintage crystal necklace and pink bow to the outfit. When I asked her why she said, “Because if you are strong you can whatever you want.”

Right from the start Isobel has impressed me with her strength. She has always had strong opinions and has never hesitated to voice them. She will not tolerate being overlooked and although she is very shy she has never, ever hesitated to speak up when she thought someone was being unfair — even if it’s an adult she doesn’t know. She has on several occasions defended and stood up for friends and classmates when she thought they weren’t treating how they should have been treated. I’m proud not only only of her moral compass, but her complete commitment to defend it.
I have no doubt that any boy who, later in her life, will try to get her to do something she is not comfortable doing will be very, very sorry, and for a long time, too.
This is a girl who will absolutely call you on your bullshit.

Her generosity and compassion and loyalty make her strong, but so does her adventurous spirit and willingness to try and do new things. She has the ability to analyze situations and is a keen observer. She combines this with innate creativity which makes her both adaptable and resilient. This combination of courage and judgement, creativity and loyalty, make her one of the strongest people I know. And I’m so thankful to be her mother.
